Now that Massive Attack is pretty much down to one member Robert Del Naja (3D), if only for a temporary time, it is still far from a solo project. I would have to say that 100th Window may be Massive Attack’s weakest album but a weak Massive Attack album is better that 90% of the other albums choking up the downtempo market. Let’s step back an album. When Mezzanine came out, it was another trendsetter. The album was considered by many to be a masterpiece (this reviewer included). Now, with Mushroom gone citing artistic differences and Daddy G doing just what his name implies, 3D is left to create the Mezzanine follow-up. Not an easy task. 100th Window keeps the dark overtone that is present throughout almost Massive Attack’s entire catalog. The thing that is missing is little twists and turns that grab the listener. Sinead O’Connor assists on 3 tracks, “What Your Soul Sings, “Special Cases, and “A Prayer For England. Her voice lends itself quite nicely to these tracks (she helped to write the lyrics as well) but as the rest of the album there are no real hooks to grab the listener. Horace Andy is back for more fun too but his unique vocals are held back a little more than usual Massive Attack fans will most definitely enjoy 100th Window but anyone looking to get into the trip-hop innovators would be better off with either Blue Lines or Mezzanine.
