Breaking Pangaea is a newer rock band from Philadelphia and if you can believe it, there are only two people in this band. Fred Mascherino and William Noon take care of everything on this album. The band has previously put out an EP entitled Take Apart The Words as a full-length entitled Cannon To A Whisper. Now with the backing of Equal Vision they are about to release the Phoenix EP. This EP displays a couple of musicians with a lot of talent and musical skills. Although Breaking Pangaea is not immediately catchy, on a couple of listens you start to understand their approach. They could easily fit into the emotional punk side of things but there seems to me even more going on with Phoenix. The album has some technical time switches as well as some interesting key changes. Listen to the title track for a perfect example of this. They still know how to write a catchy song too. Check out the chunky "Better Off" for further proof. These 5 songs go by pretty fast and I found myself hitting the repeat button a few times to get my fill. I'll be interested in seeing where Breaking Pangaea goes from here.
