The Music - The Music
You have to wonder what a band is thinking when they pick a completely uninspired name like The Music. The UK hype machine has been working overtime on this Leeds based rock act and they have been on tour extensively with Coldplay across North America to see if that hype could be recreated on this side of the ocean (coming to Calgary May 22). They have somehow been lumped in with the garage rock revival scene that includes The Hives and The Strokes but there is so much differences between these guys that it doesn't do anyone justice. There is more in common with The Music and Primal Scream than anything. The Music is able to have a bit of a lo-fi, almost distant production while possessing an array of swirling guitars. On slower songs you can't help but make a connection to Richard Ashcroft and his Verve days, case in point "Too High". While The Music's debut isn't instantly like-able, I found that a couple listens made me see what rags like NME and other UK mags saw in the band. I think this is only the beginning for The Music though. The guys are still young and have some maturing to do that will only add to the depth of the music. Adam Nutter is the bands highlight with his simply awesome guitar licks. It's reminiscent of Jimmy Page at times. Robert Harvey's vocals are very original and also have some growing to do. This isn't going to be just a flash-in-the-pan for these guys. Watch out for their next album.
