Broadcast - Pendulum
The Birmingham electro rock band known as Broadcast are back with a new EP entitled Pendulum. They have had a bit of a hiatus since their 2000 EP release Extended Play Two. I'm still waiting for their full-length Warp debut. Their first LP, The Noise Made By People was a great accomplishment and everyone is waiting for their next full-length. In the meantime these sporadic EP's will have to do. Pendulum is 6 songs that end up being all over the place. The album starts out with the title track and Trish Keenan's vocals that fit the electro-pop song nicely. She sounds seductive next to the samples and eerily dark overtone. Imagine if Aphex Twin incorporated a female vocalist in the style of Nico. She is also present on the next track, "Small Song IV", which is a more sombre effort but equally challenging with it's monotone style broken synth note. It really works though. "One Hour Empire" is an instrumental that comes off like a jazz track. "Still Feel Like Tears" is the best pop track on the album. The music is still challenging but Trish's vocals pulls everything together nicely to make it very listenable. Pendulum shows that Broadcast hasn't gone anywhere. Sometimes it takes time to create something original. That's just what the trio has done here.
