The waiting is finally over for Shai Hulud to release their follow-up to Hearts Once Nourished, approximately 5 years ago. That Within Blood Ill-Tempered is a very aggressive display of old school hardcore punk. Shai Hulud has always had a loud style with aggro vocals and super-sharp riffs. They incorporate a math rock style of time signature changes. This leads to a tremendously intense listen with the screaming vocals of Geert van der Velde. Guitars are fairly aggressive but there are times when Matt Fox goes off on a very melodic riff. Don't think of Shai Hulud as one of the new style of hardcore like Thursday. No, these guys stay true to the heavy not sacrificing any loudness for accessibility. Ill-Tempered has been a heavily anticipated album and Shai Hulud have totally delivered on the anticipation. The bands fans and hardcore fans alike will enjoy the heaviness that is Shai Hulud. My favorite track is the start/stop style of "Two and Twenty Misfortunes". Shai Hulud is not for the weak of heart.
