The Flaming Sideburns must have felt the heat from their Jetset debut being diluted in a sea of like minded garage bands. Save Rock 'n' Roll was a fine album but nothing really made it shine from the rest of the garage rock revivalists. They took note of this and have reinvented themselves, albeit a minor change, but with Sky Pilots they have indeed created something that stands out. There is a little more Rolling Stones thrown into this mix and I also hear similarities to Urge Overkill. They have slowed things down slightly to focus more on the music and lyrics rather than the rock. Oh, it still rocks, mark my words. Sky Pilots is actually one of the finest rock releases so far this year. And unlike some of their fellow Scandinavian counterparts, this Flaming Sideburns album does not bore. It is an amazingly refreshing listen from beginning to end. Think of where the boys in Queens of the Stone Age came from and where they ended up. This is the sort of evolution that Flaming Sideburns have made with Sky Pilots. There is so much creativity in these songs that one wonders just what crates of old music they plundered. There are still songs that rock pretty hard like "Heavy Tiger" but they have slowed things down a notch. Find out what it's like to enjoy the scenery instead of flying by so damn fast that everything becomes a blur.
