Sonna is back at it again with their instrumental mastery. Smile And The World Smiles With You is an accomplishment and a logical step forward from 2001's We Sing Loud Sing Soft Tonight. I learned my lesson with their previous album. You must listen to Sonna on headphones to fully appreciate and it does take a couple of listens to take it all in. Consider Sonna late evening music. On Smile, once again produced by Steve Albini, Sonna's slow-motion music is hypnotic at the best of times. They somehow stretch out other slow-core bands' sounds like Bedhead and Codeine and make something completely different. Low fans may like to check in with Sonna as well but remember that these guys don't utilize any vocals. The music is strictly instrumental with beats that could lull a baby to sleep. I find it amazing that they are able to play this music with hardly and overdub to be found. It might be credit to the skills of Albini but I would be willing to guess that it's actually the band itself. Sonna is one of Temporary Residence's flagship bands and fans will not be disappointed with Smiles With You.
