Prefuse 73 is one Scott Herren that takes beats and fucks with them entirely. One Word Extinguisher is his highly anticipated sophomore album after he blew electronica/hip-hop fans away with Vocal Studies + Uprock Narratives. This is the album that fans had been expecting but Herren has pulled out all the stops and is going to have an even harder time following Extinguisher. If you haven't heard of Prefuse 73 you might be aware of his other projects, Savath + Savalas or Delarosa + Asora but don't expect the same laid back beats. Quite the contrary with the in your face beats and rhythms that Prefuse 73 throws at you. There is a wide range of sounds that Scott uses on this album which makes it a very easy listen despite some of its complicated song structures. Just take a second to check out "Detchibe", one of the most progressive tracks on Extinguisher. It's a track that Aphex Twin may have attempted had he been born RJD2 instead. It's got a steady rhythm but bleeps and samples bounce in and out of your head like goof balls. First listens are always hard but you have to give Prefuse 73 the benefit of the doubt, this shit is hot. To top it off, there are collaboration with Tommy Guerrero, Mr. Lif, Diverse, Dabrye and Daedelus. I love the "Altoid Addiction" interlude as well. This album just may end up on my top 10 of the year. Time will tell.
