One really can't deny the influence that Ian MacKaye has had on punk, post-punk, math-rock, and pretty much every other underground music form. First Demo Tape is where it all started. He got together with three of his friends, Lyle Preslar, Brian Baker, and Jeff Nelson, known to many in the underground DC area as Minor Threat, in 1981 and hit the studio for the first time. Apparently unsatisfied with their performance, they never bothered to do a final mix of this take. They ended up back in the studio to record their debut 8-song 7". Dischord was going through their vaults collecting material for their Twenty Years of Dischord boxset and found this first demo. Ian has finally decided to let this release officially hit the streets. It has surfaced a couple times as bootlegs but now Minor Threat's First Demo Tape is being officially released. It is a furious 8 minutes of old-school punk rock like it's never been done. Minor Threat was an originator in their furious and fast style that would breed many branches of hardcore punk. Included on this release are some of the classics like "Minor Threat", "Straight Edge", and the infamous "Guilty of Being White". While this release is only really meant for hardcore Minor Threat fans, others may find merit in this release to find out Ian MacKaye's roots. It definitely brings back some fond skateboarding memories for me.
