For a girl who at one point in her career took 6 years to perfect an album (Car Wheels On A Gravel Road), Lucinda Williams is sure hot right now. In as many years, she has put out 3 amazing albums. I think her dry spell is over. Lucinda took a bit of a different approach with World Without Tears. She took her touring band into the studio and pretty much cut all the tracks live, adding some textures and other instruments later. This basically leads to a hard rocking affair that screams out on occasion. If "Atonement" isn't a female equivalent to a Bob Dylan song I don't know what is. Lucinda sounds vicious enough on this bluesy track to rip off anybodies head who gets in the way. And in an attempt to make up for the previous vicious track, Lucinda sings on "Sweet Side", "You don't always show your sweet side". There is still her sweet voice on tracks like the beautiful ballad "Minneapolis" and the sultry title track. If you have been following Williams for a while, you may be surprised at some of these songs. She is stirring it up a bit here and it is for the best. I'm sure her touring band appreciates the opportunity to prove themselves in the studio. Her emotions are still bared on most of the tracks. Something that makes Lucinda Williams one of the most revered female singer/songwriters of our time.
