Earlimart is a band that really sounds like it was born out of a bedroom idea. Aaron Espinoza is Earlimart's principle songwriter as well as singer and guitarist. He is joined by Ariana Murray and Davey Latter and that's pretty much it. Aaron wrote and recorded his own multi-instrumental song, along with layered vocals and an array of interesting vocal effects. The album starts out with "We're So Happy (We Left The Piano In The Truck)", a song that sets the pace for what to expect for the rest of the album. What Earlimart reminds me of is if Elliot Smith was to collaborate with Sparklehorse's Mark Linkous over a few cheap lagers. The songs become thick with all the layering that goes on and Aaron's voice is one that just whispers into your ear over top of all the noise. Earlimart slow it down for tracks like "The Movies", a nice piano ballad that comes off almost as a sea shanty. There are times though when Earlimart exposes the more psychedelic side of their music. The fun named "Burning The Cow" is an example of this style. Earlimart isn't groundbreaking but they do have fun with their music. They don't feel obliged to stick to any one kind of sound and a free to experiment. They are a band that may have a surprise hit with one of their quirky songs but for now they should be happy with college charts.
