If Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney, The Black Keys soul members, grew up in New York rather than Ohio, we might have had a second Yeah Yeah Yeah's or White Stripes. Instead, these two blues aficionados put together one of the rawest blues albums since R.L. Burnside was rediscovered. Thickfreakness is their sophomore album after their highly acclaimed debut for Alive, The Big Come Up. Once Epitaph affiliate Fat Possum caught wind of The Black Keys they made them an offer to do their next album. Auerbach and Carney dove into the studio for a straight 14 hours to record Thickfreakness with Carney not only behind the drumkit but behind the mixing boards too. The album kicks off with the super-funky title track. It seems as if funk is the order of the day too because "Hard Row" follows up nicely with a little more laid back funk. The mix that the Black Keys choose is quite raw with quite a bit of distortion. Once you get over this there is much enjoyment to be had in the album. It's a gritty and funky blues album that will put a lot of blues fans heads in a spin.
