E and his group of roving musicians are back with another album. This time around, Mark is feeling a lot happier and it shows. Shootenanny is one of the poppiest Eels album to date. E seems to take a more laid back approach to Shootenanny. There are some very mellow tracks like "Restraining Order Blues" a tongue in cheek track that brings out some of the best of his songwriting. "Love of the Loveless" sounds like a Sublime track similar to that of "What I Got". One of the coolest tracks on the album, "Rock Hard Times" is a catchy track that should gain E some much deserved attention. It seems like he just can't quite get over the hump into the mainstream. It's sad because he deserves praise for his consistent songwriting. The new laid back E is something that takes a bit of getting used to but once you figure it out, it is charming in all ways. This album finds E back to where he was on the Eels debut album, the strongest point in their five album career. Shootenanny is an all round album that not only fanatical Eels fans will enjoy but newcomers to the Eels camp as well.
