Liars - They Threw Us All In A Trench And Stuck A Monument On Top
I'm sure all you indie fanatics out there would have already found out about the Liars but for me, my special order just arrived last month. Yeah, I know. It took a while and I just kind of forgot about it. I'm glad it finally showed up because this is one hot post-punk album. It's a bit sloppier than that of the DC area rock like Fugazi but it's still pretty damn fun. The foursome recorded They Threw Us All In A Trench in a brief two day stint, produced by Steve Revitte (Beastie Boys). The Liars play disjointed rock that is angular at the best of times but the rhythm is what keeps it plugging along. It is a refreshing look at post-punk that bands like Les Savy Fav have hit on previously. They hit on a few digital sounds and samples like on the closing epic "This Dust Makes That Mud". The Liars give a just reason to listen to album more than once. This album grows with every single listen. The coolest track on the album has to be "Mr. Your On Fire Mr.". It's got the clap track, or what sounds like it anyway. Upbeat and energetic is what the Liars do even if they are a bit jerky and disjointed. The guys have a good time and it should be very interesting to see how they follow this album up.
