Digable Planets where a hip hop wonder back in the 90's and some may have wondered just what happened to the group. Well, Ishmael Butler, aka Butterfly, headed back to Seattle, his hometown, and adopted a new name, Cherrywine. He took some time off and rediscovered the blues and learned how to play guitar. Cherrywine is unleashing his first solo album on us and he has titled it Bright Black. Don't expect a blues album or even the logical follow-up to Blowout Comb or any other Digable Planets for that matter. Cherrywine has chosen a little more soulful route and dropped some of the political statements that were abound on his previous band's albums. He still tries to make some statements on issues like major label's in the hip hop world but you can tell that Bright Black is his album and he is just trying to please himself. Unfortunately, that's what seems to happen. Cherrywine has a few interesting moments on the album but he should sit down and try to get a little more figured out before his sophomore album. One interesting fact about this album is that Cherrywine chooses to use live instrumentation on it. On this fact, I applaud Cherrywine. He just needs to sit down and think about his song structures a little more and he could have a winning formula.
