The Walkmen may be one of the most unique pop bands in the past few years. The band is made up of three former members of Jonathan Fire-Eater and two former members of a band called the Recoys. The band takes influence too diverse to mention here and spew out a eery style of rock that sounds like a weird dream. Not a nightmare but a dream where you wake up and go "What the f--k was that all about?" Now, whether you know it or not, you have heard The Walkmen before. They provide that catchy song on the Saturn car commercial, the one where they are driving through childhood. That song is on here and it's called "We've Been Had". The guys probably made more money with that one ad placement than their entire time as Jonathan Fire-Eater. Songs on the album seem to fade in with lonely piano keys being played and then Leithauser brings in his vocals slowly but surely in an almost Bono style. The band could have reached out and delved into the rock sound that Jonathan Fire-Eater had but wisely chose to narrow their focus to this ethereal style of pop. It works very well and comes off sounding brilliant and unique. This is a band that may not become the next U2 but I would keep an eye on them anyway. They have something different that you don't hear these days and that should amount to something.
