The production stinks on this album. I really liked Division of Laura Lee's Black City but this stinks. Oh, wait a sec. I'm an idiot. It helps if you plug in the headphones all the way. Ah, much better. This is more along the lines of what I had expected. If you were like me and fully appreciated their Black City album you will be as curious about this Swedish band's roots as I. 97-99 is somewhat what I expected. In their embryonic stages of life Division of Laura Lee had more in common with Jawbox and Fugazi than fellow countrymen The Hives or Mooney Suzuki. 97-99 blasts through 12 post-rock tracks DC style like nobodies business. If Black City wasn't such an accomplishment I would have wished that Division stayed along this path. The songs are focused and concise as well as tight, something that a young band sometimes has problems with. Listen to how tight they pull off the break in "44". They slow right down and just have the bass and drums keeping a quiet time with a hard to restrain guitar being plucked ever so cautiously. I might even say that Fugazi should listen to this to get some ideas for their own music. It is really that good albeit different that what they are doing now.
