New Sacred Cow is an album that almost didn't make it onto store shelves. Kenna's debut album was due out on Fred Durst's vanity label but somehow got indefinitely postponed. In an unlikely move, the album was released from that label and allowed to be put out on Columbia Records. New Sacred Cow takes some time to grow on you (this review almost didn't materialize until a second listen was had). It's a little like a Seal album with a lot of artificial instruments and layered vocals to the point of nausea. This may have something to do with the production by Kenna's friend Chad Hugo of the hitmaker's the Neptunes. I think it is more the production of the album that is difficult rather than Kenna's songwriting. I would love to hear Kenna in an intimate setting, playing his music with minimal interference rather than the heavily programmed beats and instruments. Kenna was born in Ethiopia and raised in the USA and has always enjoyed music. He states U2, The Cars, The Beatles and Depeche Mode as influences and you can make out a little of each in each song (except maybe the Beatles). This album should be respected for the songwriting and not the production. Tone down the production next time, Kenna, and let your songs been shown in their true form.
