Verbena - La Musica Negra
Verbena has caught a lot of flack for copying other bands. Their debut was compared to the Rolling Stones and then on Into The Pink they couldn't get away with comparisons to Nirvana. I'm sure having Dave Grohl producint wouldn't help at all. Well, on La Musica Negra I think people may admit that Verbena has indeed come into their own. The boys in Verbena want to make it so bad that you can sense it in every note that is played on La Musica Negra. There is a traditional rock formula that they stick to and don't sway too far from. This is good in the sense that they do it very well. This may not be a stellar album but it does rock and there are moments where you do find yourself rocking out right along with them. Listen to the southern rock stylings of "White Grrls" and you end up singing the chorus by the time the song is over. This is the sign of a great pop/rock song. It would be one of my suggestions for singles on La Musica Negra. Album opener, "Way Out West" takes the band in a bit of a new direction ala Fu Manchu, with heavy guitars. That's one thing that this album does well is guitar rock. Looking for that Nirvana sounding song? Look no further than "Rememberer" where Scott Bondy is a dead ringer for Kurt Cobain. Guitar rock fans would do good by picking up the latest Verbena.
