Fembots - Small Town Murder Scene
FemBots is a duo from Toronto, Ontario founded in 1998 by Dave MacKinnon and Brian Poirier. The duo plays a quirky type of music that reminds me of the Eels a bit, more in delivery than actual songwriting. The songs are very diverse and I found myself looking for more once the CD was over. "Small Town Murder Scene" was the best song on the album, sounding like old folk tune being sung at the end of the night. The one that everyone recognizes slowly but surely and then joins in one by one. There is a bit of a Tom Waits feel to the song structures but the vocals are perfect. "Mom's Ether Blues" is a wacky blues track where someone keeps saying "Mom's been drinking ether". There is another gem in the opener, "Broken and Blue", a track that chugs along just enough to keep from falling apart. There is a future for the FemBots, whether it be a little indie band that the underground just adores or if it be a band that a prominent independent label picks up and becomes a college fave, that's all left to be determined. Either way, the FemBots have recorded a great little album that should please many people.
