University is a four-piece rock band from Chicago, Illinois, a city steeped in great musical history, especially when it comes to independent music. Make Believe is the band's debut EP and it shows a band with potential. There are sprawling tracks like "She Moves In Black" that incorporate many different influences. It seems like their number one influence is power pop though. I hear a bit of Matthew Sweet in some songs like "Love Will Find A Way" but it isn't blatant. One influence that I don't throw around freely is The Figgs and Jay Rutherford's voice keeps bringing me to that band. Songs are tight and well written but there is room for improvement with arrangements. I would say that University just needs to find their own identity, come up with a more unique name and tour and play as much as they can, and they will come out on top. There are plenty of good songs on Make Believe making it a worthy purchase if you come across it.
