Tes - x2
Terrence Tessora is a worthy rapper and x2 (times two) is his feature debut. This is an album that hip hop fans with either love or hate. Tes has quite a unique style with a nasal sound and the ability to rap at about 150 words per second (well, not quite). Tes has good company, hanging out with Aesop Rock and Antipop. He stands out because he chooses to do both vocals as well as production. Nothing phases the guy either. He can rap over top of pretty much anything in his arsenal. The "Fool Time" lyrics are on top of a complicated little snare drum beat with a Twilight Zone style sample. He has that dark overtone that artists like Cannibal Ox use so well. It's a little different for a artist from New York to use this style but it is welcome. He has a bit of jazz elements in his music like on "Off On Monday". It sounds like a little smoky jazz background from the future. "Trigga Da Whistla" is one of the most creative and out of left field rap tracks I have heard this year. There is a great diversity between songs. This is most likely because Tes doesn't rely on guest artists to fill up the record. Tes has a firm grip on what hip hop is all about. He is not afraid to go his own way by pushing the rap limits. The hip hop world needs a few more Tes' in it to bring it back into the limelight.
