Now, I'm not sure if I'm the right person to be reviewing a Marilyn Manson album. Sure, I have caught myself singing along to "Beautiful People" and get a kick out of his cover of "Sweet Dreams are Made Of This" but I can't say that I know him or am a fan. So, I am approaching this album like I have never heard a thing and that there is no stigma attached to the Antichrist himself. I found The Golden Age of Grotesque to be very entertaining. Marilyn Manson has a legion of fans behind him and it's because of albums of this calibre. If you haven't been in tune with the man since the Antichrist Superstar days, I would suggest that you check in for a quick listen. Manson is fucking heavy but still very accessible. See, for me I don't really care for screamo but Manson's yelling is not so bad. He really must be a softy at heart. A track like "Doll-Dagga Buzz-Buzz Ziggety-Zag" is not only fun to say but listening to it is a riot. Marilyn is still as pissed off as ever and why shouldn't he be? His record sales haven't been quite up to par even with his entourage following his every move. I'm not sure if it's just me but this album really makes me rethink what Manson is all about. The single "mOBSCENE" is one of the best heavy rock tracks I have heard in ages and the track "This Is The New Shit" is super cool too. It seems like Marilyn Manson has something to prove to the possible new audience he acquired from his appearance on Michael Moore's documentary "Bowling For Columbine". If you are at all curious then I suggest you check The Golden Age of Grotesque out at your local listening station.

Definitely the lowest mark in this artist's career. GAOG, for me and many other fans, marked Manson's final evolutionary step from musician to self-marketer. The album on the whole feels hollow, uninspired and drab. While the inspiration is obvious when you read Manson speak about the project, it doesn't show up in the music. I've never been a fan of anything Skold (guitarist/bassist) has been apart of, never thought he had any merit as a musician, and this album more or less proves that to me further. A few select standouts like the title track and it's sleazy groove and "Para-Noir", with Manson trading off vocals with a seductive-sounding female and a solo played blindfolded by John 5, attempt to keep the album above ground but it's just not enough. Whatever happened to the guy who brought us Antichrist Superstar and Mechanical Animals?
