The Jealous Sound is a long awaited project that almost didn't see the light of day. Blair Shehan of Knapsack fame (or almost) started up The Jealous Sound with Pedro Benito (Sunday's Best), John McGinnis, and recent addition Adam Wade (Jawbox. Shudder To Think) and released their debut EP back in the summer of 2000. Their story is the familiar one of being courted by a major record label only to end up with that label disappearing and leaving The Jealous Sound scratching their heads. Better Looking Records was happy to release Kill Them With Kindness for them though (they released the EP). Now, three years later with so much anticipation behind it, The Jealous Sound releases one of the hottest albums of 2003. It has elements of emo that Knapsack was reaching for, but incorporates the melodic side of power pop making the sugary harmonies irresistible. Blair and company decided to go into the studio with Tim O'Heir who had done albums for Superdrag, Morphine, and Sebadoh amongst others. This proved to be a wise move because the sound on the album probably wouldn't have happened without him. Shehan has a voice that really can't be rivaled. He can whisper out the softest lyrics and then belt out some heavy power-pop at the drop of a hat. The Jealous Sound is not too proud to include some heartfelt ballads like "Recovery Room". The Get Up Kids should aspire to do an album with so much depth and emotion. Kill Them With Kindness is one of the best releases this year and it makes me happy to say that The Jealous Sound may be one of the most honest and straightforward rock bands out there.
