I got into Marshall Crenshaw a couple years ago from a friend recommending 9 Volt Years and when scrap recordings make such an impression as this one did you tend to take note. Crenshaw has just released his latest album, again on Razor and Tie, and has crowned his career with a brilliant and diverse album. There is a reason why Marshall is looked upon as a contemporary in the field of singers and songwriters. It's probably a blessing that Crenshaw hasn't broken the top 40 keeping him focused on what really drives him. While What's In The Bag is a little rootsy, the giveaway is "From Now Until Then", a track that sounds similar to that of a Bruce Cockburn track. There are still so many elements of rock on the album. "Despite The Sun" a smokey instrumental with a sprawling guitar line that belongs on an Allman Brothers album. Crenshaw's music doesn't totally stand out but that doesn't make his music mediocre by any means. There are a couple tracks that are interesting. He has chosen to cover Prince's "Take Me With You" as well as Bootsy Collins' "I'd Rather Be With You". Consistency is what Marshall Crenshaw does the best. He doesn't waver at all.
