The Gimmes are back with another dose of their clever cover songs and this time around they have chosen a bunch of R & B style tracks from a couple of generations. The album starts off with an unlikely cover of Whitney Houston's "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" and seamlessly move into Lionel Richie's "Hello". What about taking on Boyz II Men's "End of the Road"? No easy feat but for these punk rock cover veterans they pull no punches and make all these sappy boring songs come to life. And then there is the coveted Bill Wither's track "Ain't No Sunshine" that they rip wide open. Seems to me they started covering Black Flag's "Six Pack" at the start of Seal's "Crazy" giving it a metal edge and making it my favorite track on Take A Break. And "I'll Be There" begins like the Cars' "You're all I Got Tonight", providing a fun pop feel to it. R Kelly takes a hit with a great punk cover of "I Believe I Can Fly". The boys bring it down with "Save The Best For Last" and finish the album off with "Natural Women". Only the Gimme Gimme's could pull this one off as clean as they did. I think the funniest thing is that the Me First albums are usually the best selling albums on Fat Wreck. If it keeps all the other bands going then they will keep doing these albums until they run out of songs.
