If you want to thank any group for creating downtempo chill music, you would have to include 9 Lazy 9 in that list. Now they haven't been as prolific as some other bands out there but that seems par for the course. Look at Kruder and Dorfmeister as we all still wait around to see if they will ever put out a proper full-length album. 9 Lazy 9 is the moniker for Keir Fraserello and Giacomo Braddellini (James Braddell of Funki Porcini fame) and they were one of the first signings of the Ninja Tune label back in 1992. A 9 Lazy 9 album is not to be taken too literally. In fact, the best way to enjoy a 9 Lazy 9 album is laid out in the sun with a cocktail and a good book. Sweet Jones is like a warm breeze blowing in your hair. It's like soft caress from a feather. The funny thing with 9 Lazy 9 is that even though they were an originator, they never really became more than a cult band. Groups like Thievery Corporation came in and released regular albums of the same sort of material and became very popular. 9 Lazy 9 is more contemporary though. They don't use any latin beats or anything worldly. They are straight on chill music and that's nice for a change. They opt for a smooth jazzy approach instead. This is the sort of music for 30 something people that are looking for something different. Kids these days wouldn't appreciate what goes into an album like Sweet Jones. Bring on the heat.
