Merge has always been a brick layer when it comes to indie music. Founded by Superchunk vocalist, Mac McCaughan, it has been around now for the better part of my musical curiosities and housed some of my favorite artists. Survive and Advance is their super low-priced label sampler featuring most of their bands. Vol. 3 is special in the fact that a lot of these tracks are unreleased from indie world's favorite artists. The album opens with one of the best tracks on the album, an unreleased track from Lambchop (currently in the studio) called "Heavy Metal Trouble Girl". The Ladybug Transistor makes an appearance with a track from their forthcoming self-titled album. A new band called the Rosebuds submit an upbeat track called "I'd Feel Better". The Clientele have been getting a lot of press lately and there is an unreleased track called "Breathing Soft and Low". A hard to find Spoon track is here too called "You Gotta Feel It (demo)". A Crooked Fingers song called "Angelina" from their Red Devil Dawn CD is included and it's live on WERS Radio. This isn't a label sampler. It's more a rare and collectible collection from the label's hottest bands today. Find out why Merge has been so successful over the years. Hmm. Seems Mac forgot to put anything from Superchunk on here. List price for this sampler is $6.98 so don't pay a penny more. It's a bargain at twice that price.
