Although John Acquaviva has many business relations to Richie Hawtin (shared ownership in a label) the two of them sound very different. Where Richie tends to be a little more on the sampler side of things John is a tried and true DJ. He has more similarities to that of Ian Pooley and Frankie Bones with the way that he spins the vinyl. Mainhattan Sound is a highlight of one of Acquaviva’s favorite labels, Force Inc.. He was invited to play Sven Vath’s birthday party in Frankfurt and was introduced to this hard pounding label. The tracks that John chose for Mainhatten Sound are varied nicely, some are fairly well known (in Germany at least) and others are a little more obscure but equally pleasant to listen to. The mix turns out very funky and completely hard driving techno that is cutting edge all the way. One track that really stands out is “Herz aus Gold by Rob Acid. It could be very annoying like some of Daft Punk’s stuff but the squealing is kept under control and it ends up being somewhat mesmerizing. Shadow has done a fine job with this compilation and John Acquaviva has chosen proper tracks to make a superior mix disc.
