The Desert Fathers is a band comprised of some of the members of The Forms, also on Three Spheres. On their bio they throw out some comparisons like "Shellac, Wu-Tang Clan, My Bloody Valentine, Kool Keith and the Pixes" but they remind me most of a mixture of Shellac and Hum. Imagine Hum as a little more aggressive and experimental and you can start to think what The Desert Fathers are all about. There are some songs that are very listenable like "Peace In That". The track clips along at a nice pace but sounds kind of warble like they are about to fall apart. Another great track is "The Art Of Reason". There are some songs that are not so listenable making the album a little sporadic. The Spirituality was recorded by Steve Albini (probably where the Shellac influence comes in) and Greg Norman. This might explain the interjection of sound bursts all over the place but the guys in the band should be credited for one of the more experimental pop albums that has been released this year. If the album was a little more consistent it could have easily got a five star rating. The Desert Fathers is a very interesting and creative group that will be get some recognition for Spirituality.
