F.M. Cornog just seems like a perfect fit for Merge Records. Garbageheads On Endless Stun is his 5th album and one of his most accomplished recording as East River Pipe. Cornog wrote, performed, recorded and mixed all of the sounds that you hear on this record at his home in New Jersey on a Tascam 388 mini-studio. And it really is brilliant. It sounds as if there was so much production done on it and like Dave Friedman was working on it. East River Pipe's music is gentle and unassuming. So unassuming in fact that I listened to it for three times before the charm actually started to set in. Cornog got rave reviews on his 1999 album, The Gasoline Age but I think that critics (me included) are going to trade it in for Garbageheads. This album has so much charm that despite the clown on the cover, it is one of the most classiest self-recorded albums in a long, long time. The songs are simple and yet there is so much to them to keep you coming back for more. It is like I have rediscovered East River Pipe. There is a very good reason that F.M. Cornog chooses to do everything, he doesn't need any help whatsoever. Garbageheads On Endless Stun is a musical masterpiece and it was created by one man. Don't let Jonathan Donahue (Mercury Rev) hear this otherwise he will break down when he finds out that Cornog is this brilliant.
