Broadcast - Haha Sound
Broadcast makes strange, ethereal music. Not everyone is going to appreciate this music. Let's get that out in the open. Now, Haha Sound is their sophomore full-length album, following their EP earlier this year, Pendulum. Haha Sound fits right into the Pendulum style of music but manages to keep moving forward. This is how I explain Broadcast: imagine Hunter S. Thompson's novel, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas being based around an Andy Warhol New York instead and the main character was Katherine Hepburn. There is nothing immediate about Haha Sound whatsoever. It is an album that takes time to appreciate. It gets better with age like a fine wine. When you listen to a track like "Hawk" you can see that they have been influenced by the likes of Yo La Tengo. Trish Keenan is a great vocalist and they utilize her to the best of their abilities. The album is haunting but the charm begins to appear the later in the evening you listen to Broadcast. Haha Sound is one of those albums that would only get a 3 star rating if you only listened to it a couple of times but after repeated listens it easily garners a 4.5. A track like "Black Umbrellas" takes away from the whole experience though.
