Right off the bat, one thing can be said about Sloan and that is that they are consistent. Celebrating 10 years since their first full-length album, Smeared and their seventh overall album, the boys of Sloan have a quality that people come to expect. Action Pact falls along those lines. One thing that I haven't found on this album is an instant hit like all their other albums have had. Fact, this is the first album that Sloan hasn't owned the rights to. In the past they had taken prudent measures not to lose control of their musical rights but Action Pact marks a new leaf for the band, they have chosen to go with a publishing company. It is the first album that hasn't Murderecords imprint on it and the first that Sloan hasn't produced themselves (Tom Rothrock takes that duty over). I wonder if that got the boys in a knot and they got stage-fright. It's not that Action Pact is a bad album. Quite the contrary though. If this came out from some newbie Canadian act I would praise it highly but Sloan is up on a pedestal already, so they have some reputation to live up to. One of the best and most fun songs on the album is "Ready For You" that has a big glam sound to it. It's funny too because they are coming off of my favorite album of their career, Pretty Together. What the hell is "Who Loves Life More?" It sounds like Pat Benetar should be singing it. I think that maybe Rothrock made some bad decisions on tracks for Action Pact. But, as most Sloan albums, the more you listen to Action Pact, the better it gets. My 3 may turn into a 4 after a month or two on my iPod.
