Prince Paul is one guy that knows the Politics of the Business. This album is a bit of a concept album about a concept album. His last album was the highly under-rated A Prince Among Thieves that came out in 1999. While he has taken 4 years to follow it up, he also lost the support of Tommy Boy. Politics starts out with a skit called "A Day In The Life" where a record producer is all hip over an ideal Paul has and then comes back saying that it's just not going to work. This, in fact, is what happened with a lot of Prince Paul's projects. His Handsome Boy Modeling School project with Dan The Automator was so brilliant that people just didn't get it. So the Prince has decided to go for a more straightforward album, just what the people want, right? Well, in theory, it sounds great but Politics seems like it's half baked. I don't know if Paul has spread himself too thin here but there is not much that grabs the uninitiated. There are some good beats and some talented rappers like Erick Sermon, Masta Ace, Guru, Chuck D, Ice-T, Kardinal Offishall, and the Beatnuts but there just seems to be something missing on this album. With the skill that Prince Paul has, I'm sure he'll rebound nicely off of this album and come out with a killer one next time. This album is not necessary but should please some of the die-hard Prince Paul fans.
