I hadn't heard of Spoken before A Moment Of Imperfect Clarity landed on my desk. From my research for this review I found out that this Arkansas band used to be close to the rap-metal style of P.O.D.. With this album it is a total shift away from that sound and this five piece dives more into the heavier side of the pop territory. There is nary a trace of rap on Clarity. In fact, the band has more in common with Finch than of P.O.D. now. Some times the vocalist, Matt Baird, almost sounds as if he's singing for A Perfect Circle. Being on Tooth and Nail, one can make the Christian assumption here and sure enough there is a recurring theme in the lyrics. Don't shy away from Spoken if that's not your thing because the soaring melodies and lush harmonies the band puts into the album makes it all worth while. There could be a little more diversity in the songs but overall Spoken have provided a fairly impressive Tooth and Nail debut. Spoken will prove to be a force once they have a little more experience. Gggarth has done a great job making what they have sound awesome, now it's up to Spoken to reach out and create a great, diverse album that I'm sure they've got in them.
