With the recent passing of Warren Zevon, it felt appropriate to take a look at his latest album and catch up with him. Zevon was one of those artists that was fairly successful earlier on in his career with the song "Werewolves of London". He was just seeing a resurgence of popularity with the release of 2000's Life'll Kill Ya, his first offering of original material since 1995. I think knowing you are going to die (inoperable lung cancer) would make for good song fodder and that is exactly what happened with Zevon. Now for his final album, Warren pulled all the stops and had a line-up that most people would kill for on an album. Names like Mike Campbell, Tom Petty, Emmylou Harris, Billy Bob Thorton, Jim Keltner, Joe Walsh, Tommy Shaw, Ry Cooder, Dwight Yoakam, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, T-Bone Burnett, John Waite, and even more than that adorn The Wind. It's quite strange hearing Warren having as good a time as he is on songs like "The Rest Of The Night". Emmylou sounds pretty as always on the gentle "Please Stay". This may seem trite as Warren was indeed Knocking on Heaven's Door but do we really need another cover of this Dylan classic? The album as a whole is a great document for Zevon to leave behind. It showcases his brilliant and underrated songwriting as well as the connections that he developed over the years in the industry. Zevon will be missed by all his friends and fans.
