In yet another project of the Acid Mothers Temple collective, key figures Kawabata Makoto (guitar) and Cotton Casino (vocal) have teamed up with David Keenan (guitar), known best as a writer for UK magazine The Wire but with a past that includes a stint in Glasgow's Telstar Ponies. Like those epic krautrock tracks made to fit the sides of a vinyl record, this album features two long pieces, at 25 and 24 minutes. Track one, "We Are For The Dark", is a slowly swaying dirge. Strange, gong-like percussion imparts a distinctly Eastern feel, while wails of guitar - and high-pitched vocals so otherworldly you hardly recognize them as human - flow over it. The soundtrack to a procession of monks through medieval Siberia, filmed by Werner Herzog. Track two, "Our God Is A Mighty Fortress" transposes the title of the common hymn, reinforcing the impression of the pagan and ancient, of worship of stone and earth. It has a slightly faster tempo and a more layered feel - more droning than chiming. Perhaps the monks have arrived at their destination and are performing a ritual under the stars? Turn off the lights, put on your robe, and go back in time.
