I know it's been said before but I need to start off this review saying that I wish that Jane's Addiction had never gotten back together. What is with bands getting back together after having a fairly successful career? Everyone swears that they would never play in a band with (x) again. Take note, Pixies. Keep the band as a great memory rather than turning it into a mockery. Much praise goes towards Eric Avery who declined the reunion offer. At least one of them didn't sell out. OK, with that being said, I actually enjoyed the new Jane's Addiction album, for the most part anyway. See, they know what their doing. Dave Navarro's huge riffs are back and Perry is dressing like a glam fashion god. I think one of the problems I have with the album is that they brought in big rock producer Bob Ezrin. And again, not that he does a bad job but the sheen that he puts on Strays doesn't fare well with the rough edges we had in the early Jane's. I know I'm sounding a little two-faced here. And it's true, I really want to hate Strays but I find myself listening to it and thinking that this is so much better than the drivel that is on the radio right now, or for that matter, in the past 10 years. By now you should have heard the huge rock sound of "Just Because" (check out the multimedia page for a video link), but there are all the elements that were on Ritual. One of my favorite tracks is "Price I Pay". It starts out with a bit of a "Three Days" style and then moves into some newer territory. Then there is "Superhero" which completely sucks. But again, I think Jane's Addiction lucked out here. This is a good album but it doesn't warrant defunct bands to get back together.
