One of the creative forces behind one of the strangest and coolest bands in Canada, The Rheostatics, is about to embark on his second solo album, Operation Infinite Joy. There is something to be said for Martin Tielli's unique falsetto style of singing. It is not annoying like some consistent falsetto voices you may have heard. What makes Martin even better is his equally compelling guitar playing. His guitar style is almost instantly recognizable. While the Rheostatics have never really achieved commercial success, they have become a very recognizable part of the Canadian musical landscape. Tielli's first album, ...Poppy Salesman, was a jump into this multi-faceted musician's head. Operation Infinite Joy picks up where Poppy Salesman left off. Martin leans a little more towards fuller arrangements here but they are still extremely dynamic from one song to the next. For those people that prefer Tielli's talents to the rest of the Rheostatics, Operation Infinite Joy should bring just that. This is an amazingly diverse album for one songwriter to bring to the table. Especially one who is used to sharing the spotlight with others. And if that is enough reason to check out this album, maybe the lush artwork created by Tielli himself would appeal to you.
