"Fuck You, your drunk". An interesting way to start off his new CD. But then again, Hawksley Workman has never really been conventional. The stories have been many about where Hawksley came from but we do know he is Canadian (or do we?). He garnered critical acclaim for his last album, (Last Night We Were) The Delicious Wolves, and is gearing up for the same for Lover/Fighter, a great collection of rock tracks all over the spectrum. His voice reminds me a lot of fellow Canadian, Rufus Wainwright, if only Rufus had some balls. I found myself thinking of the Pixies on "Tonight Romanticize The Automobile", one of the most screwed up song titles I have heard. It had the same feel just with a little clearer vocal delivery. On "Smoke Baby" Workman dives into an almost hip hop groove, with the beat being the main focus of the song. The album closer (or so we are brought to think) is very Rufus-like, a gentle ballad with strong vocals. The first single, "Anger As Beauty" (to which the video is contained on the CD) is one of the strongest tracks and catchiest tracks on the album. I vote for "Tonight Romanticize The Automobile" as second single. I haven't really paid attention to Hawksley before, who apparently plays and produces pretty much everything on the album, but I am going to delve back into his catalog and find out just where this lovely Canadian came from.
