When I was reviewing Dondero's last album, Shooting At The Sun With A Water Gun, I mentioned that I thought he was a nomad or a wanderer. Turns out I was wrong. He's The Transient. I guess I was close though. Anyway, David Dondero is back with another album on Future Farmer again (maybe the first home he has had in a while). Dondero sounds homely but it's my thinking that he is more lonely than homely. The song subjects are everything from the road, death, love, loss, glory and hopelessness. There are times when David is understated on songs like "Vaporize" and other times when he gets going pretty good like on "Living and the Dead". This album was recorded in Lincoln, Nebraska by Mike Mogis who has done such projects as Bright Eyes and Lullaby for the Working Class. David had some help from some of his friends on The Transient, making it a group effort. The result is a lot of the same sound that he achieved on his Future Farmer debut but because Dondero is very original in his approach it doesn't really matter. You don't hear everyone trying to copy what he's doing. It is similar to his friend Conor Oberst's Bright Eyes project but it comes off sounding even more sparse. If your interested in Bright Eyes, be sure and give David Dondero a chance. I think you may just get into this.
