I was first introduced to Portable in the middle of the TVT recording career. Their album Secret Life was a favorite of mine for a while. I lost touch with the band (missed out on their last album) and was surprised to hear that Portable was doing it themselves now. Starsongs is their new album that they are putting out themselves after the dissolution of the TVT contract. Starsongs is a brief album with only 7 songs on it. I'm surprised they didn't call it an EP with todays standards. Starsongs kicks off strong with "Cassiopeia", a track that really reminds me of Urge Overkill with it's aggressiveness mixed with melody. In fact, Portable tends to rely a lot on their strong melodies. "Little Record Player" reminds me of Our Lady Peace (take that for what you will) but there seems to be more depth to Portable. One of my favorite tracks, though, is the mellow acoustic "Day After Yesterday" where Chance's voice really shines. I think that Portable is still a relevant band. I'm sure that their hometown just adores their shows and their hardcore fanbase will seek out Starsongs. Starsongs is available for sale on www.portablemusic.com.
