Last summer, one of my friends called me up last minute and asked if I would like to go to the Underground to see a band called the Constantines. I had never heard of them but just before he asked I had read a big article in our weekly entertainment paper. We got to the show and with all the buzz surrounding the Constantines there were actually only about 30 people at the show. It was a very intense and personal show, feeling more like a band at a house party than a bar. Anyway, the show was intense and I had a feeling that these boys from Guelph, Ontario would make a splash. Then I heard about their Sub Pop deal and the rest, as they say, is history. Shine A Light has now climbed ever college chart imaginable. When I first listened to Shine A Light, I thought this was quite different than that show that I had heard a mere year ago. The show was intense and loud, reminding me of a similar show a few more years back, Shellac, but the CD sounds nothing like that. It kicks off totally aggressive with "National Hum" and ends off gentle with "Sub-Domestic". Shine A Light shows even more diversity than one could ever imagine in a smoky basement bar. It also sounds so mature for these young guys. I hope that this is an album that stands the test of time.
