The Blake Babies reunion that happened back in 2000 spawned something else - Some Girls. Juliana Hatfield and Freda Love enjoyed working together so much that they wanted to pursue another path, that path would become Some Girls. The two started sending song ideas to each other through the mail and before they knew it they were in Echo Park Studios in Indiana laying down tracks for Feel It. In the process, Juliana enlisted the help of Heidi Gluck for demo purposes. Heidi was then asked to join the group for the sessions and then became a permanent member. Feel It actually sounds more together than the Blake Babies reunion CD. Juliana is of course on lead vocals and guitars with Frida carrying the beat. Heidi plays bass and back up Juliana's vocals. Feel It is a fresh album, one that could possibly be Juliana's shining moments. Her voice has become something more than what it used to be. Maybe it's maturation but regardless it makes Some Girls shine as one of the best female fronted bands this year (or the past few for that matter). Some tracks are bluesy (a re-worked Robert Johnson track "Malted Milk") while other tracks are downright pop. Some Girls may end up being a college favorite this year, even with the little fanfare that it's been getting. Hatfield still reminds me of Sheryl Crow and probably always will.
