Godsmack - Faceless
I must admit that in the 6 years that Godsmack has been around I have never really listened to anything that they have done. Maybe I've caught a song or two on the radio but nothing that could be consider giving Godsmack a chance. Well, a few months ago I got Faceless in my mailbox for review purposes. It's taken this long to get over all the stigma that is attached to major label metal bands like this and get it into my stereo. I can hear a lot of similarities to many other big metal bands out there but Godsmack seems to be a little different. They mix a Korn sound with a Stone Temple Pilots groove ("Dead and Broken" sounds like it could have been on Core). Some of the tracks get downright funky like "Releasing The Demons". If you still haven't found an Alice In Chains replacement then you need to check out Godsmack, they should fit the bill quite nicely. No rop-metal here, just heavy grooves with chunky guitars. They sometimes get as heavy as Pantera but they keep it accessible. There is no doubt that Godsmack is trying for more radio play but I'm not sure if Faceless is going to be the album to do it. It's just a tad too heavy for that. Faceless tends to get a little monotonous after a couple of listens but one song at a time, it works.
