Prototype is the debut release from LA-based by way of New York punk band Big Collapse. They brag about being in a band called Shift that was at one point signed to Columbia Records in the 90s. Yeah, I missed out on them too. Anyway, this is about a band called Big Collapse. The Militia Group heard about this band coming up and decided to take a chance on them. Big Collapse chose Ben Moore to produce their debut. Their sound is a little different, with a lot of 90s influences in it. The music ends up very melodic for a punk band but not in the way that the So-Cal punk scene is. While the band does possess the ability to create man sized hooks in their music, they just don't keep my attention. That's not for a lack of trying on my end either. A track like "Deliver Me" has everything that it needs but somehow it just doesn't sink in. After 5 listens to Prototype I couldn't even say if I had a favorite song. I know there are people that will eat this shit up but I think in order to fully appreciate this band, you will have to see them live, take their disc home, and relive the night. I wouldn't write off Big Collapse yet though. I think they just need to refine their sound and we could see something big.
