From the same Vancouver scene that spawned The New Pornographers, The Gay promises to follow down the same path. The Gay is made up of Coco Culbertson (Tennessee Twin), Maija Martin (Tennessee Twin), Tobey Black (Maow), Sara Lapsley (Vancouver Nights), and Keith Parry (Superconductor) with Kurt Dahle in the production chair, proving that they are somewhat of a supergroup as well. I would assume that the band is referring to gay as in happy rather than homosexual because their music evokes happiness at every turn. There are harmonies oozing out of every speaker hole while this is playing. While The New Pornographers are all about rocking out, The Gay opts for more gentle melodies, ala Essex Green. Sure, The Gay gets moving at times but with the 4 girls and 1 guy, they tend to stick to concentrating on catchiness rather than volume. The girls harmonize very nicely and the songs come off sounding very original despite this sort of thing being done many times before. I don't know if I could handle You Know The Rules on a repeat basis but once and a while, it will provide all the pleasures one needs in one listening session. Kurt Dahle gets a mention for both his flattering picture inside the liner as well as his impressive production job.
