Jason Pierce decides to move away from his last studio album, Let It Come Down. Actually, he has moved so far away that they hardly sound like the same band. Amazing Grace is a move towards the distorted sounds of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, showing that Pierce may have been taken by the garage rock revolution that is taking over the world. "Never Goin Back" is a great example of this. Spiritualized move a blues styled track into a distorted and muddy sound that really sounds different. "The Power and the Glory" could have been an edit from their last album, very dramatic and instrumental. The thing with Amazing Grace is that it is going to leave long time fans scratching their heads and new fans may just wonder what Pierce is thinking. There are some bands that can get away with that but Spiritualized needs to be out there. This is almost too grounded for these guys. The album closer is one of the highlights here. "Lay It Down" is gentle and very pleasant. "Hold On" and "Lord Let It Rain On Me" actually do sound like hymns, the first with it's lilting 3/4 beat and the second with it's gospel choir. I know it's good to change with the times but when your fans come to expect something, then it's hard to let them down lightly.
