Contrived is a band that came to me unexpectedly. They are on a Toronto-based label and themselves hail from Nova Scotia. Earlier this year they dropped an album called Pursuit of Plots on anyone who cared and guess what? Some people actually did care what these Maritimer's were up to. Contrived easily fit into the post-punk category, akin to the DC area and the Dischord style but this band move into some areas that make their music a little different. To start with, Contrived believe in an equal dose of singing and screaming. No, their music is anything but emo. In fact, I was totally surprised that I didn't see the name Steve Albini under production credits. Sounds are stupidly thick and the songs are more than creative. What's the point in doing something if it's been done before. That's what seems to be going through Contrived's mind. The music sounds a little familiar but the closest you can pin it is the DC post-punk sound. I will be very interested to see just how far Contrived take this.
