Perry Blake is one of those classic cases of falling from a major label deal (and another casualty of the massive Polygram / Universal merger). His debut album, released on Polydor, ended up Top 40 in France, due to his seductive singing style and Burt Bacharach style arrangements. French label, Naive, picked him up and released Still Life, and it reached out across Europe, remaining virtually unknown in Britain and his native Ireland. He then recorded an EP soundtrack for a movie called Presque Rien. Perry Blake is about to attempt North America now. With the release of California, Blake and his Naive label are going to attempt a US release. His sounds are seductive and the arrangements may be a little too much for American audiences. Although some women will swoon when they hear this music. It is seductive at the best of times. Think Bryan Ferry and you are closer than you think. It's rather difficult to pull out favorite songs too because they kind of blend into one another. California is a mature album meant for the 30+ crowd. There are more than enough qualities on this album to warrant radio play on AOR radio. Let's see if Blake has what it takes to be successful in the US.
